Keep Tasmania GM Free

Victory! Tasmania extends its GM moratorium

The Safe Food Foundation welcomes the decision of The Tasmanian Government to extend indefinitely its ban on genetically modified (GM) crops and animals. The moratorium will continue to include exemptions for non-commercial filed trials of GM crops.

The Safe Food Foundation, along with other groups, spent months working on the ground with farmers, food businesses and consumers to stress the importance of keeping the ban. In October last year, the Safe Food Foundation and Organics Tasmania had also co-hosted two industry forums on the benefits or otherwise of Tasmania extending its GMO moratorium.

“Our efforts have paid off. Tasmania will keep its enviable position of being the only Australian State that can claim to be genuinely GM free. It is a sensible decision and one that other States would be well advised to pay attention to.” Scott Kinnear, Director of the Safe Food Foundation, said.

The Safe Food Foundation has sent a submission to the Tasmanian Government regarding its GM crop moratorium. You can read it here.
