Sue King December 20, 2013 at 11:37 pm
The farmer farming GM crops makes a choice, I am sure he did not intend to hurt his neigbour maybe funds should go to the whole fight, not just one side. I buy organic all of the time and do not support GM crops because they hurt the natural flora and fauna and in particular bees. Monoculture and vast swathes of GM is not the way to go….I remember the rampant Canola popping up in every hedgerow in England. We need this fight, we need to stand together
SFF December 21, 2013 at 8:24 am
Hi Sue, we wholeheartedly agree that this case is a failure of the legislation that allowed GM canola to be grown without any reasonable controls or compensation other than common law. This is a test case and it will guide the development of laws around the world. The neighbour is being well supported by a pro GM group the Pastoralists & Graziers Association. Steve is however getting his support from thousands of people making donations the world over and this is showing the way forward for a new and exciting way to crowd fund important litigation like this case.
Isabel January 8, 2014 at 5:55 am
Then, Sue, people should learn about their choices before harming anyone. Do you think Monsanto did not know? They did. In any case, the neighbout should sue Monsanto for misinformation.
Eva February 1, 2014 at 8:39 am
Sue, the money should only go to Steve. The neighbor who’s Gmos contaminated Steve’s farm is getting support for Monsanto. Monsanto has huge resources and legal team of powerful lawyers who will stop at nothing to defeat Steve. They are known for intimidation, bullying and twisting facts in order to win and bankrupt the focuser. It would not be fair to donate money to Steve’s neighbor, he has worlds biggest bully behind him with unlimited financial resources!
I pray that Steve wins his case! This would help farmers all over the world to stand up strong and fight against Monsanto and their GMOs.
andi January 27, 2016 at 9:31 am
Agree totally Eva.
As a retired organic farmer this was always a cause of concern. Neighbours inadvertantly or deliberately using products that could harm your production and quality.
In this case it is obviously the neighbour’s choice to use Monsanto’s GMO, therefore it was his deliberate informed or otherwisw choice to inflict harm onto his neighbour. to me there is absolutely no difference between deliberately using a crop that will inflict decertification, spraying toxic herbicides or insecticides across the boundary fence to inflict decertification.

Has a petition been created through social change organisations such as SumOfUs and Change.org (amongst others)? These types of organisations have many subscribers and can raise the profile of this important case. I would be happy to start a petition up on Steve’s behalf. I look forward to hearing from you.
Regards,
Ed
SFF December 6, 2013 at 4:40 pm
Hi Ed, we have a petition that is started by another farmer who has also been contaminated. It is also supported by two other farmers who are concerned by the effects of GM in Australia. It has had great success so far but the more people get behind it the better so please spread it around! The link is here. Thank you for your support!

It’s so important to stop the Bio-tech industry. They are unscrupulous and only interested in financial profit and market domination. They have clearly the After us the Deluge mentality.
It is up to us to safeguard the safety of the food system and the future of our children.
Keep up the good work!
Greatings from the Netherlands.

Happy to help a great cause!
Kristine Brown December 5, 2013 at 4:03 pm
Steve all the very best. I want to eat organic not Frankenstein food! Thank goodness for people like you making the bio-tech companies accountable. They are unscrupulous and profit driven and have not one altruistic bone in their bodies. Good luck!

It really brings a tear to my eye, that our freedoms regarding food production are being diminished by big business. All the best Steve we are right behind you. This case should be better publicised on main stream media, I wonder why they’re not saying much?
Helen Lewin December 10, 2013 at 9:38 am
The first thing I thought of when reading this is “The Merchant of Venice” – you know, you can have my heart but you must not spill one drop of blood while doing so. Then I got mad that the Australian Govt. allows BIG Foreign Giants like Monsanto to operate in Australia with a ‘No Liability’ clause. Such predatory behaviour should not be tolerated. But this whole argument is at least a decade old, and still Monsanto stealthily creeps on gobbling up the agricultural world because it cannot prevent GM spread. I want freedom from Monsanto ! give us back our CHOICE.
Janice December 10, 2013 at 4:07 pm
Go for it Steve. Donation on the way.

Biannca Pace December 13, 2013 at 4:37 pm
We have a God given right and freedom to live in a way that is healthy & wholesome.
Monsanto has no right to endanger the world’s food supply for the sake of their bottom line!
And Monsanto isn’t even an Australian Company ! What & who gives it the right to come here uninvited and cause the destruction if our food industry which is an economic plus for our country, note that Asian countries can’t get enough of our organic food. Note also that China has banned GMO in that country as have Italy and France.
What is the WA Govt., thinking?
The WA Govt is as irresponsible as Monsanto. The WA Govt., should be held responsible and forced to pay compensation too. At the very least to pay for the court case that would never have arisen, if not for their irresponsible and destructive decision!
Biannca Pace December 13, 2013 at 4:42 pm

Has anyone been in touch with mercola.com? Dr Mercola is a tireless campaigner for safe food and has personally financially supported anti GM campaigns in the US. He is absolutely passionate about this topic and may agree to do what he can for this – his email list is huge worldwide.

Monsanto are in the process of ending the organic/non GM food industry. If they are not stopped there will be no more organic or non GM foods left. Please spread this information around to everyone you can, via any means you can, including writing to your politicians. (One thing they care about is being re-elected.) There is a great movie about this, called “Seeds of Death” on youtube, URL: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eUd9rRSLY4A
Also the Wikipedia page is full of bad stuff they do. Please watch the movie, and spread it around. And buy organic to support the industry and your health.

I think this is so funny!!! If it was in Russia??? They would kidnap the lawyer for MONSANTO and not release him until the court was over!.. Than they would blame it on Al-kaida!!! Who says it is Russian’s fault??? In US would be perhaps, some accidents arranged for the lawyer to be in!!!…
and the blame would not be on the farmer but on GOD!!!

I have experienced canola as a significant, and hard to remove under-vine and inter-row pest on the vineyard.
The exponents of GM claim that gene flow from GM crops does not occur at quite low separation distances. But are not these crops dependant on pollinators such as honey bees that fly kilometres. From my past readings I remember that gene flow in natural populations was low – around 0.1% depending on genus/species. Yet we know that a single mutation in a gene or even a base pair can either be lethal or confer a selective advantage to an organism. Do we want such selective advantages to occur in plants that become insidiously a ubiquitous pest after many years and generations?
Ilana Leeds February 5, 2014 at 10:31 am
B’H
Organic farming is the ONLY way to go. Large corporations care only about profitability and mass production. They do not care about the health of those who consume their foods. They cover up and twist and lie and pervert the truth.
Personally I believe millions will become sick and die or starve because of the way food is produced and processed nowadays. If you know too much it is scary and you want to go to bed and stick your head under the doona and hope the nightmare will go away. It will not. As someone who had been constantly sick from what I later realized was too many processed and refined foods, I do know what I am talking about.
The smaller producer of primary produce and products has far more control over the quality of what they are producing, whether it is livestock or agricultural products. You cannot tell me that someone who sheds and milks 2,000 goats or cows knows much about the health of each individual animal. Fruit and vegetables mass produced and kept in cold storage for months before it is put onto the supermarket shelves has been gassed and robbed of the basic essential nutrients and vitamins present in natural foods. I can take potatoes from my garden and they taste nothing like the shop bought ones. The former are fresher, tastier and healthier.
I actually think because of GM crops, we are going to have to put our crops into greenhouses to isolate them from GM crops and use bee hives in the greenhouses to pollinate for some crops and to use solar power to control the environment of the huge multi span greenhouses in order to feed people proper foods.
That is what it is coming to.

Steve and other organic farmers in Australia, have you been in touch with the UK’s Guy Watson of Riverford Organic Farms? If not please do so asap. He is Britain’s champion organic farmer and has twice been nominated as the BBC’c Farmer of the Year – most recently last year. As a 1-time management consultant, he knows how to marshall the arguments.

The ruling was insane. I think it was Oscar Wilde who said “The law is an ass”, how right he was. Rationality has completely deserted the law when a person whose livelihood is destroyed by someone else’s activities is presented with a massive bill for the privilege of having their crops destroyed!
Lesley Millward March 24, 2015 at 3:42 pm
Steve your up against the world’s biggest gangsters who are killing off our planet. Don’t give up, so many people are counting on you to win for your farm and for the planet. Many have not heard about your problem and I am sure if they knew they would send you money and make pressure on the government. Translate your problem into many languages because Monsanto is known all over the world and I am sure there are lots of people would like to see the end to GMO’s. Unfortunately it was very apparent on Australian Story Baxter’s driving motivation was only money, made clear by his comment on his pending divorce costing so much the money could have instead been used to buy more land. Nevermind the fact he’d still have a wife! Such greed comes from a bad plac. I believe that in life, you reap what you sow…no pun intended
