Steve Marsh Update – September 2012

Steve’s case is proceeding in the WA Supreme Court. A number of strategic conferences have been held with the lawyers from both sides in front of the judge. The judge has made various orders in relation to discovery and filing of documents which are normal procedural orders in cases like such as this one. The next strategic conference will be in late October where it is likely that the judge will set a trial date. The trial is expected to start early next year and may run for two to three weeks.

The Safe Food Foundation is coordinating fund raising to pay for disbursements.  Donations and networking are most welcome to ensure that we have the resources to support Steve. To roll over and accept GM contamination is unthinkable!

Please help us support Steve by making a DONATION!

Steve Marsh is a farmer from Kojonup, Western Australia whose organic farm was contaminated in late 2010, allegedly by a neighbouring farmer’s GM canola. As a result of this contamination he has lost his organic certification.

The contamination of 325ha of Steve’s 478ha farm led to the indefinite loss of his organic certification by the National Association of Sustainable Agriculture Australia (NASAA) and Steve has recently announced his intention to issue proceedings in the WA Supreme Court through Slater & Gordon Lawyers. Steve is seeking compensation for loss and damage from his GM neighbour. The Safe Food Foundation is coordinating fundraising to support Steve’s potentially landmark case through Friends of the Earth Australia.

Steve is taking on the GM industry like David against Goliath and working to protect our right to choose GM-free foods. There is sufficient evidence of harm to show that GM foods are toxic and their approval by regulatory agencies should be urgently reviewed.

As such, The Safe Food Foundation is running a high profile campaign to increase public awareness about the threat of GM to non-GM and organic farming and  to highlight the risks of GMO and other potentially unsafe agricultural practices, both in Australia and worldwide. In partnership with The Safe Food Foundation, Friends of the Earth Australia is accepting donations to support Steve’s case.

If you support the right of Australian farmers to produce organic, GM-free food – which ultimately equals your right to choose organic food – then please make a DONATION.

Messages of Support for Steve Marsh

“He’s like our Percy Schmeiser in Canada, a true hero! Hats off to you Steve, go get ‘em!” -GMO Free Canada

“Thank you for taking the fight up to the multinational giant on the question of GM contamination of the farm you’ve obviously worked so hard to have recognised as organic” -Anne

“All the best with your court case Steve. It is deeply disturbing that our elected representatives seem to be in the pocket of this very nasty behemoth and are ignoring the responsibility that they owe to those who elected them.It is a disgrace that politicians would back a multi-national company who have a desire to control all agriculture. I am sure that this is placing a huge strain on you and I would like you to know that many are behind you in your battle to feed us with pure food. I no longer buy canola oil as I am concerned about GM contamination” -Robynne

“Steve, good on you for fighting on behalf of ALL Australians. Your courageous stance will impact the quality of life of our children and grandchildren, not just WA farmers. You have my full support. I hope you win this case and that, eventually, politicians will outlaw all GM experiments in Australia before it’s too late” -Marlyse

“Thank you Steve Marsh and all those supporting him for trying to protect my right to eat genetically modified-free food. This is a fight for the integrity of Australian food and the farming industry, and is vital to our economy. I wish you well and hope for a successful outcome to your action” -Jess
