It is happening! Steve Marsh’s trial is scheduled to start on February 10 next year in the Supreme Court of Western Australia. This will be the first case in the world of this kind and will determine if farmers have the right to choose what they grow — and ultimately if we have the right to choose what we eat.
Steve is, of course, the Australian farmer who lost organic certification on most of his land after it was contaminated by Monsanto’s genetically modified (GM) canola. Steve is suing his neighbour.
The court may decide that it is unreasonable for the organic industry to have a zero tolerance to GMOs. If that is the decision, Australians will no longer have a right to eat GM-free products. There will be no guarantee that products grown in Australia are GM-free. The cost of GM-free products will rise if non-GM farmers have to pay the cost of contamination. Eventually, GM-free crops may be a thing of history due to long-term contamination.
That’s why we all have to help present the strongest case.
Steve is standing up for what he believes in. But he cannot do it alone.
Which is why the Safe Food Foundation is today launching an international campaign to support him.
Your donation – big or small – will support a landmark case which affects us all.
Please have a look at this short video explaining his story and join us in supporting Steve to protect the future of GM-free food.
